Every red-blooded pilot knows the name Chesley Sullenberger but do you remember Al Haynes?
Captain Haynes worked for United Airlines and deserves credit and admiration equal to Sully’s. In 1989, he landed a DC-10 in Sioux City, Iowa with no flight controls. The hydraulics had all been severed when the #2 engine threw a fan blade.
Of the 296 people on board, 184 survived the crash landing.
Captain Haynes died this week in Seattle at the age of 87.
